This prompts me to think. I guess most started a niche sites by targeting a profitable or a mini niche without asking a question like this.

Definitely, there are a lot of affiliate programs for us to promote out there that are compatible with our interests and hobbies.

    Nice inspirational post here.

Yeah, too many people get wrapped into simply developing sites that are profitable and not something they have interest in. It is typically a terrible mistake too.

I actually found this post really useful! I've been thinking about exploiting my niche of indie bands. I currently run 1 fan website that became the largest for that band, and now I'm thinking about creating a network of similar bands! I think one important point that you missed out was keyword research. If a niche is saturated in the search engines there's not a lot of point pursuing it.

I agree. Sharing your passion doesn't feel like work at all. I love beach houses, too!

"If a niche is saturated in the search engines there’s not a lot of point pursuing it."

Why? as long as you love it and passionate about something people will find you, plus odds are your content will be much better than the other content.

    @debbie, great post.

Doing a topic you love also helps you stay motivated as opposed to writing about air purifiers or mold cause some keyword tool told you to lol ;)

Great article, I enjoyed it. Also, with saturation in niche areas... it's not always necessarily a bad thing. If it's saturated, that means there is plenty of money to be made. If the niche is also your passion, then it may drive your passion even more to see your blog/site grow and continually grow past the competition!

It's true...choosing a niche is very important..you should make sure that you are very familiar with your topics so you won't run out of ideas..because it's very important to constantly update your blogs and you can only update it regularly if you have lots of topics and ideas in your mind that you want to post.

Just 5 minutes before reading this article, I was thinking about opening a web site about trucks, my passion. Your article was the push I needed. Thanks.

Nice post. Set me thinking. Often, one gets carried away by cheer peer pressure. At the end of the day, he gets down-casted because he has spent so much energy pursuing a goal he is not really interested in.
I sure will follow my passion. That the niche one is interested in is already saturated doesn't mean anything. If you really have passion for it, it is a matter of time before you stand out amidst the crowd.
Thanks for sharing. I want to have a beach house too.

recently i change my website's topic into something i really passionate about. it cost me a lot, i have to remove all the past articles, i have to tweak the theme from scratch again. a lot work to do from the start again. but i guess it would be better than doing something that i don't like (though it give me money :p )
anyway, great article... and, new theme huh? i like this better than the last one

Now, Now, Mr Cow. Do you REALLY love beach huts or is this just search engine fodder? I am having trouble finding that ONE thing that I love neough to write about all the time. Hence my blog being random right now.

I couldn't agree more. I was actually thinking about posting this several times over the last few weeks and you beat me to it. Didn't your grandma always say "stick with what you know...?"

It is wonderful once you can do things you love and get paid for doing that...It might be hard at the beginning, especially because we want to see immediate results.
You will see tons of fake success stories that will try to impress you can make money easily. But you have to follow your own path. The key is in persistence.
Once you set a goal it is just a matter of time...you will reach it! If not today, tomorrow.

I believe that even if you don't know your real passion yet, starting a blog on any topic is a BIG step toward your success. Once you get comfortable in all this blogging thing, it's just a matter of minutes setting a new blog with a topic you really love. So if you don't know your true passion, blog about your pets, your friends whatever, and when you find that ONE you will be ready for it.
