John Cow dot COM: How Long Before Your Blog Will Start Making Money?

  • Courtney TURTLE · 2 years ago
It is funny that you said you might not have been so successful so quickly if you had a different domain. I wondered the same thing about your blog in my post here http://courtneyturtle.com/a-bunch-of-words-on-s... I am trying to see if lightening can strike twice with my parody blog on another popular blogger!
  • browie · 2 years ago
Tough to make a buck in the blog world. Sometimes you just get lucky
  • Chip · 2 years ago
Well, constant writing, socializing, finding backlinks continuously, writing, writing, emailing, optimizing, promoting, and so on and so forth will eventually pay off. For some, in 2-3 months, for others in 7-8 months.

It's both luck and hard work.
  • Dom · 2 years ago
    That's all good advice.

I've been working on a similar "experiment" to yours, except rather than having a silly domain and a funky wordpress theme, I started with a bog standard wordpress installation and a newly registered domain.

I think it's going to be tough to do anything like as well as you guys... but the challenge is half the fun, right?
  • Lori · 2 years ago
I was very naive in the beginning and thought it was going to be soooo easy  Boy was I wrong! If it hadn't been for a good super awesome blogger ( Cman ), then I probably would have have given up. My first 3 months were spent learning. I'm glad I didn't give up though because I have made some really good money and friends.

  • Deron Sizemore · 2 years ago
Very true, it takes a while and a lot of people don't have the drive to stick with it.

I had pretty realistic expectations going into blogging in knowing that I wouldn't make anything the first month or even in the first year for that matter. I would like to generate some income eventually but I'm just trying to focus on building traffic right now. I've not even tried to monetize it yet. I'm not real sure where to start to be honest with monetization. I'd like to make a little extra, but I don't want to alienate readers either by having ads on the site.
  • The Monetizer · 2 years ago
Great post Cow, very inspirational..I think too many people fall into the trap of reading blogs like this or Chow or Problogger and thinking, "yeah if they did it I can start doing it immediately!". It does take a bit of time to see some results but can be well worth the time and effortwe.

don't tell me your readers don't know or never heard of this advice before? Or am am i in a wrong blog?!
  • A Blog about Nothing · 2 years ago
It always takes work to make money. Blogging is no different than a "real" business, but for some reason people think it's going to be easier. If anything blogging is harder because you don't have anything aside from virtual screen space and an opinion to offer prospective viewers and advertisers. At least in my real world business I can physically manifest my work for my customers.
  • James · 2 years ago
It's easy, but the best is not to do it for the money. Better be building sites for the money and have a blog for random posts.
  • Ruchir · 2 years ago
In my opinion, it takes at least 6 months for the big money to start rolling in....Offcourse, to get as big as John Chow and Darren Rowse it can take upto 2 years...
  • Charles Lau · 2 years ago
You are really speaking from experience about making money with a blogger... At the initial stage of mine, I didn't really make any money. I simply just blog and play with my own domain name. An idea came along to do video reviews... And I got to review you cows and slowly, it simply expands out. Though I am not using any innovative idea to take an unfair step, I am working closely to build my reputation and blog up in the Internet world. In fact, I found myself having to review other people's websites and books in the form of sponsored posts. I think it's all worth it to work just one step at a time to get yourself up and running to become a full time blogger in the end...

I believe that once you are able to work full time, starting another blog is just a breeze since you know what to do to bring in the buck...

Thank you cows for giving me the chance to review you... I love cows who have milk for me! hehe

Does this means that we can start spamming your mailbox asking for a link?

I can't predict when my blog will start making money but I am always waiting for the day to come.
  • Charles Lau · 2 years ago
    Haha... I'm glad I haven't spam anybody yet... :)
I hope I wouldn't do that at all...

Even though you should work hard on your blog, dont let that be your only money maker, there are way to many less time consuming means to make money online.
  • Wayne Liew · 2 years ago
    @ King Jacob
This is true. I always keep my eyes open for any opportunities that will comeout from the web.

Apart from that, we should always learning new things as well. I am currently doing my studies on internet marketing.
  • Charles Lau · 2 years ago
@Wayne Liew: Doing studies on internet marketing? Is that a school?
  • Forest Parks · 2 years ago
Thanks for this inspiring post Cow guy.

I started blogging in April and thought I would be able to make money quickly, obviously I quickly learned I was wrong but I did discover that I quite enjoyed blogging and the idea of living an online life to pay the bills is still very much my goal!

However I still have not made much money (about $20) but things are finally, slowly, shaping up and I can see income increasing slightly from now on.

Especially with the wise words I receive from this and many other blogs.
  • Kiltak · 2 years ago
Don't forget folks, hard work and perseverance pay off after a while.. I barely made anything for about 6 months when I first started in 2005, than BOOM.. revenue started increasing exponentially..
  • KingJacob · 2 years ago
@wayne: Are you doing actual studies as in university? Im doing "studies" as well but in pre-med/physics and I dont think ive seen a degree in specifically internet marketing yet.
  • Teejay · 2 years ago

I love this kind of post.
  • Publishers Weblog · 2 years ago
I reckon its more stupid when people make blogs like Mr Chow and Mr Shoemoney and expect to get paid like them without the same traffic.
  • jblu · 2 years ago
Somewhat motivating...I hope to prove you true in a few months or so.
  • Donald Mckenzie Jr · 2 years ago
This was a really good post. I first started out as one of those people who thinks making money from blogging is easy. Boy was I wrong. The first thing you need to do is spend a lot of time building traffic. In terms of blogging, this can take a few months to a year. My blog is a little over a month old and I have gotten an alexa rank of around 1.1million. I know that with more work and patience I can easily bring this even lower. Keep up the great posts man.

Nice post. Should help a lot of people
