John Cow dot COM: Say Good-bye to XP?

  • B. Durant · 1 year ago
XP has been a work horse for many computer users, but it is getting long in the tooth. It is inevitable that they will phase it out unless the rest of the computing world stands still and stops making advances. In that case XP's aging technology and architecture would be just fine.

No need for a petition and my bet is that most people who have signed it are just doing so out of a knee-jerk reaction for some reason or another. Vista certainly isn't going to replace XP (at least not in its current state), but there needs to be something coming down the pipe in the next few years.

It sure would be nice if the OS manufacturer could get the product right BEFORE it is released for purchase at exorbitantly high prices!!!

If I want to install XP on my computer 50 years from now, why shouldn't I be able to do so. It belongs to me after I purchase it legally.

This is so frustrating. Is Microsoft going to reimburse me for all the new hardware that I have to buy because it won't work with Vista? I doubt it. And they wonder why they're losing market share to Apple! I am a PC guy and have condemned Apple fanboys for years, but I am seriously considering making my next computer purchase a Mac. Then I will be free of all this hassle once and for all.

Well, we Microsoft Partners tried to keep XP too!!! Believe it or not there were more of us than on the petition. We had to move to Vista in order to remain partners... then the bottom hit. Nothing worked. Or businesses relied on our computers. WELL... I don't know what happened. I hope they know certain programs will not update their software to be compatible with VISTA. Maybe they are trying to force the hand. I do not belive it will happen. When the time comes... watch the MACS go to town on sales. Then maybe they will re-evaluate. I will get on the horn again to some of my "pals" there. I say that loosely as it appears they have thrown us under the bus.

Vista just won't work for me in business. It is too slow, too much of a resource hog... and much more negatives then positives.

Before it is too late there is a hosting firm www.bestwebhostever.com that has a great sale until the 4th. Check it out and if you sell anything requiring an SSL cert. make sure you go TURBO.

    Cheers,
    Bets

Well, 'speaking' as a dummy with little technical know how, I say bring back Windows 98. In my opinion, it was their best OS.

I used to run my first PC on Win 95, without the patches. Heck, I didn't even know what a patch was twelve years ago. Show you how much of a dummy I reall was/am. By the time I was told about the fixes, MS no longer supported 95.

I have been using Linux for years and have found very few things that I cannot do with a Linux based OS that I could do with an MS product.

There are times when there might be an issue with some piece of hardware, but so far I'm quite happy with Open SuSe 10.3 - and the nice thing - it's free! One of these days, I'll add up all the software expenses I haven't had to pay by making the switch to Linux years ago.

XP should be dropped. It makes too much sense.
They are getting sales off Vista because now people have it installed, albeit against their will, and need support from it. More and more business if being done through Vista because it is becoming a new medium for doing business... especially off of things like the new version of Microsoft Office.

Cut XP, make more profit. Damn, they are smart ;)

 I must admit I cried like a baby when I bought a new lap top, and it came installed with vista, it was a little bit too different from XP for me and it gave me a real bad headache. But I persevered and I can honestly say its a big improvement on XP. XP will go the same way as the dinosaur, you have too move with the times or you will be stuck in the past........

re: Kevin Puls... Win98 the best? What?!

Major advancements where made with 2k and XP as far as system stability and security that was completely lacking or non-existent in Win9x.
